John Ruffin left a message on November 17, 2024:
Baxter Carr, Jr. was one of a kind, an icon of creativity, rationality, reliability, humor, humility, determination, endurance, and so much more. To be 100+ and have any cognitive grasp, much less as razor-sharp a consciousness as Baxter, is astounding! Baxter was my next-door neighbor from my age 7 through college years, and I have to say that he was my virtual surrogate dad. His creativity, particularly in his home wood shop was a constant interest and education for me. My own woodworking for life was inspired by his expertise. And Baxter was I'm certain my own father's (J. Randolph "Ran" Ruffin) best friend. Even though they differed in age by more than 20 years, they found a connection and bond that led them to create the Williamsburg Garden center together, a sideline to their day jobs at first, but then a full time passion for my dad when he retired. This effort together was way more joyful than profitable, and both of our families witnessed the love these two had for this work and contribution to the community and they had for each other. When my dad fell ill in his 70's, Baxter was an especially close comfort and support. The Ruffin and Carr families have been so closely linked over more than 70 years that it is so very hard to say goodbye to this patriarch, as well as his bride for life, Ruth. I do hope that I can attend whatever ceremony is planned and yet dealing with some infirmities of my own, travel from the west coast may present a challenge. In all events, the entire Carr family has my enduring love and deepest condolences in this moment, with the expectation that our connections will live on in all successive generations. In reverance, John R.Ruffin, Jr.
