VIRGINIA BEACH – Virginia Pond O’Keefe, 82, died June 24, 2011. She was born February 22, 1929 in Cold Springs, NY and has been a resident of Virginia Beach since 1994. A survivor of five different cancers over the past seven years, she succumbed finally to pancreatic cancer.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, James O’Keefe; four children, Anne Miller and husband, Darrell, of North Carolina; Kathryn Schweers of Virginia Beach; Thomas O’Keefe and wife, Kimberly, of Richmond; and Mary Austin and husband, Kevin, of Virginia Beach; 11 grandchildren; and sister, Barbara Pond Jakusovzsky of Florida.
Her life events included: a youth during the Great Depression, one-room school teacher in California, a PhD in education from New York University, English teaching career and forensics & debate coach in Fairfax County High Schools, a regular contributing writer to Tidewater Women, published author of text books Speaking to Think, Thinking to Speak and Developing Critical Thinking, and published author of award winning poetry and juvenile fiction. She was active in the Tidewaters Sowers of Justice and local writing groups.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Virginia Beach on July 5 at 11:00 a.m. by Father Rob Cole with a reception immediately following at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia, 5361-A Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23462.
