Oscar Glenwood “Glen” Whitehurst, aged 90, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday July 31, 2021.

Born December 24, 1930, in Princess Anne County, VA he was the son of the late Roy and Hazel Whitehurst and was a lifelong resident of Virginia Beach. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Jean, brother Claude, and nephew Larry Whitehurst. Glen is survived by his daughter, Nancy Gail Whitehurst (James Lane); grandchildren Nicole Kristin Glocker (Jim Butler), Colby Glen Fairchild (Karri), and Amber Gail Shipp; great-grandchildren Kayla Dawn Fairchild, Paul David Glocker, Jr., Parker James-Kennedy Reese, Emma Jean Glocker, Cole Phillip Glocker, Elli-Paige Ann Fairchild, Maci Gail Glocker, and Hunter Jane Shipp. Also survived by brother-in-law Stuart Brooks (Betty Anne), as well as numerous neighbors and friends.

Glen was a devoted husband, father and Papa, his memory will forever be cherished. His family will treasure the stories he was able to share; growing up as a young boy in Pungo, working in his father’s grocery stores, and meeting the love of his life when they were children riding ponies on Laskin Road.

Glen attended Oceana High School and served in the Navy from 1947-1952. He was a very proud Korean War Veteran. After serving in the Navy, Glen owned and operated Glen’s American Service Station on 17th St. and Cypress Ave. Glen worked for the High Constable of Virginia Beach and retired from the City of Virginia Beach Treasurer’s Office. In his 90 years, Glen had a love of the outdoors; hunting in Bath County, VA for over 50 years, snow skiing in the winter and crabbing in Rudee Inlet. After his retirement, Glen and Jean often took vacations to casinos where you could find Glen at the roulette table or playing blackjack. If he wasn’t in a casino, he most likely had a video poker machine in his hands. In his later years, Glen was a self-professed T.V. addict, loving The Virginian and Gunsmoke western shows. His resiliency and determination were admirable. Glen was going to do what he wanted no matter what.

During his lifetime, Glen was a loyal friend and neighbor to many, he was fondly known as the Mayor of Shadowlawn, living in the Shadowlawn neighborhood for over 70 years. Glen enjoyed attending the breakfast club at Burger King, playing dominoes with his closest friends. In recent years, Glen loved going to breakfast at two of his favorite local spots, The Beach Pub and Mary’s Restaurant. Glen was renowned for ordering a bloody mary, “hold the vegetables”. If you ever had the opportunity to sit down and talk with him, his stories were priceless, he had a wealth of knowledge relating to the history of Virginia Beach.

In honor of Glen, the family will hold a Celebration of Life on Sunday August 29, 2021 2pm at 816 Kennedy Avenue Virginia Beach, VA. Please join us.
