MICKEY ‘Mick’ ACHOR, 60, transitioned to Heaven on August 28, 2021 due to complications from Covid. He was born October 16, 1960 in Cincinnati, OH, the only child of John William Achor and Thelma Jo (Dalton) Achor.
Mick and his family moved to the Kempsville area of Virginia Beach in 1972. Eventually, his parents enrolled him in Frederick Military Academy where he graduated from in 1980 as the top officer in his class. In 1982 he felt the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Coast Guard as a Machinery Technician. In 1985 he was introduced to his wife, Lee, and they married in 1986.
Mick chose to ‘homestead’ in Hampton Roads while in service to allow his family to grow up in the community. He served in many different roles during his distinguished Coast Guard Career, from manning the engine room on the last steam powered ship in the fleet (USCGC Ingham), boarding ships for inspections and drug busts, performing and running search and rescue missions, and overseeing the engineering shop at Station Portsmouth. From there he went to NESU, the USCGC Cowslip, and the Marine Safety Office. In 1999, he took the chief test on a whim, and unexpectedly, but deservedly so, made rank. His options were limited, so he chose to serve as the Command Chief of an isolated duty station in Port Clarence, AK, located in the Bering Sea. While challenging, he truly enjoyed the experience and called it the highlight of his career. In 2004 he retired after serving 22 years.
Mick was a man of few words, but when he spoke he had something meaningful to say. He loved his God, family and country. He was a talented man, smart, capable, generous and had a heart for people. Mick enjoyed working on cars, swapping stories with friends, and hanging out with his kids and grandsons. He also enjoyed going on new adventures with Lee.
Surviving are his wife Lee (Carpenter) Achor, three sons, Christopher Achor, Richard Achor, Joshua Achor, five grandsons Jeremyah, Bryant, Peyton, Braylon and Luke, and beloved nephews, aunts and uncles.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, September , at Kempsville Christian Church, 5424 Parliament Drive Virginia Beach. A reception will follow and all are welcome.
