Edward (Edd) Scott Davin, age 75, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at home with his family by his side. He was born on August 14, 1946, in Atlantic City, NJ to the late Edward Davin and the late Bess Hoffman Davin.
Edd is survived by his wife, best friend, and caregiver, Joanne R. Pruett. He is also survived by his son, E. Scott Davin, II, daughter-in-law, Theresa Davin, and his grandson, Gabriel Scott Davin. He has three brothers-in-love, Ray White, Gene LeJeune, and Wayne Thompson who will also miss having him in their lives. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Janet C. Pruett and Judilee V. Pelletier, and a nephew William Taylor.
Edd was a 1963 graduate of Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach. He studied mechanical engineering, traffic engineering, and urban transportation and planning. He worked for the city of Virginia Beach for 15 years as a traffic engineer, but automobile racing was his true passion. He returned to racing full time for as long he was physically able.
Edd’s racing career began as a teenager winning on drag strips and on oval tracks. He moved on to SCCA Road Racing and tested race cars for British Leland in the US and Canada. He scored several wins in the Professional SuperVee series and Formula Continental Championship, before moving to Prototype Sports Cars. He had 57 career wins. He won the 1984 Formula Continental Championship driving a car that he designed and built. In 1997, Edd finished 8th in the World Sports Car Championship, and was the highest placed non-factory supported private team.
His racing career was sidelined by cancer in 2000. He refused to give in to multiple forms of the disease even when told he only had months to live. He always said cancer wouldn’t kill him. He was correct. He died from complications of blood clots and Congestive Heart Failure.
He continued to challenge himself by going to flight school and acquired his light sport pilot’s license in 2010. A few years later, he became a certified ham radio operator. His most recent endeavor was to learn to play the guitar. His last several lessons were devoted to fine tuning his playing and singing of two songs: “Back in the High Life Again” (Warren Zevon version) and “Tougher than the Rest” by Chris Ledoux. His goal was to be good enough to perform onstage with his friend and mentor, Vasili Simmons.
Edd’s family extends love and gratitude to Dr. Martin O’Grady, Ms. LeeAnna Harris, NP, Dr. Boon Kok, Dr. William Grosh, Dr. Cyndi Torosky, and the nursing staff of 4 West at SVBGH for the exemplary medical care and the kindness extended to Edd and Joanne.
The service will be private. A celebration of life is planned for a later date. Please consider memorial contributions in Edd’s memory to Melanoma Research, Kidney Cancer Research, or Vascular Research.
