Brenda Lee Gwaltney, 78, passed away peacefully in her daughter’s home surrounded by her children on December 1, 2021. Born in Richmond, Va, she was daughter to John Franklin Powell, Jr and Lillie Mae Carlton. She was preceded in death by her parents and her late husband Richard Stephan Gwaltney. She was a well known artist in decorating cakes. She began her career with Farm Fresh bakery and retired from Harris Teeter with 30+ years in the business.
She is survived by her children, Stephanie Gwaltney-Smith (James), Richard Gwaltney, Jr. (Kathy), Tanya Ray (Rick), Crystal Gwaltney, and a sister, Barbara Landy. Brenda was blessed with eight grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She had a great love for the Lord and her family.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30pm on Thursday, December 16, 2021 at Blackwater Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.
