Bob Huffman passed from his earthly life December 16, 2021, at the age of 91.
Bob extravagantly loved his family. He found a Ying to his Yang in his wife of 65 years, Joyce. He was a second father to his brother Butch (Henry). In his role as a father, his love came back one hundred-fold in the love and faithfulness of his daughters, Betty Joyce (Lowenhaupt) and Lori (Shahan), his son Robert, five grandchildren (Ross and Erin Shahan, Jordan, Bailey and Tucker Lowenhaupt), 2 great-grandchildren.
He quietly served and followed the Way as a lifelong member of The United Methodist Church, first in his hometown of California, Pa and then in his adopted home of Williamsburg, Va. We talk about the saints of the church as encompassing all of those who have lived faithfully, but Bob and his wife Joyce deserve the title.
As a citizen, Bob was well-informed, voted, and was vocal about the social justice issues close to his heart. He served his nation as a Marine, spending a year in combat in Korea. Like many combat veterans, he rarely talked about his service, which undoubtedly contributed to his exemplary sense of duty.
As an educator of 30 years, Bob’s influence extended beyond the wisdom and skills he imparted to the students in his sphere of influence. He was a “Pied Piper” to many. Babies and children were naturally drawn to him, and teens sought his steady guidance. He was always available to offer a listening ear, a hug, or to share a word of wisdom when needed.
As a friend, Bob’s vocabulary seemed to lack the word “no”. Friends were just another part of his extended family and he shared himself generously with them.
A Celebration of Life service is planned for the near future at Wellspring United Methodist Church.
Arrangements in care of Cremation Society of Virginia – Newport News Office.
