C. Diane Bittner was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister who went to be with the Lord on February 7, 2022, after a brief battle with ovarian cancer.
Diane was born on October 9, 1946 in Pittsburgh, PA where she made many lifelong friends. Diane and her family eventually moved to Newport News, where she graduated from Christopher Newport University with a degree in Information Science. She retired from the City of Newport News where she worked as an IT Project Manager.
Diane most loved spending time with her family and friends, including attending her grandchildren’s activities, enjoying a beach vacation, watching a Steelers’ game, or sharing a good meal and a glass of wine. She was an active member of The Chesapeake retirement community, including serving as the President of the Resident’s Council. In 2021 she was recognized as the Chesapeake’s Influencer of the Year. Diane was known for her strength and determination, as well as her tireless compassion and generosity. She was always willing to step in and give of her time and resources to help anyone who was in need.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Kay Hodgson, and grandmother, Pearl Hodgson.
Diane is survived by Ed, her husband of 54 years; children, Mark Bittner (Jennifer) and Lisa Harrell (Carter); grandchildren Spencer and Elizabeth Harrell and Zachary and Alex Bittner; siblings Brad Hodgson and Ruth Stuebgen; and cousins, August and Mary Crisanti.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and residents of the Chesapeake Retirement Community for the outpouring of support and love that they have received during this difficult time.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 25, 2022 from 10:00-11:00am at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Newport News. A Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00am at the church followed by a private family interment at the OLMC Columbarium
