June 3, 1943 - May 20, 2022

Ronald F. Bishop, 78, of Virginia Beach, Va, passed away at home on May 20, 2022. Born in Casper, WY to Carl and Helen Bishop, he was raised in Drumright, OK. Ron was a 1965 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and continued on to Naval Postgraduate School earning a master’s degree in physics. He proudly served his country for 20 years retiring at the rank of Commander. After his service, Ron worked as a government contractor until finally retiring to spend time with his 5 grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Page Bishop, and his two daughters Allison (Scott) Hartraft of Chesapeake and Meighan Bishop of Virginia Beach.

A service of remembrance will be held June 4, 2022 at 10:00 at King’s Grant Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, VA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his honor to Wounded Warrior Project.

Cdr Bishop was my first CO when I reported to USS JOHN KING DDG-3. He was very approachable, fair and always had something positive to say. Fair winds . And following seas.. RIP

My deepest sympathy go out to you for the loss of your loved one. He was my commanding officer on board the John King and you couldn’t ask for a better captain and I truly mean what I say here. Mrs Bishop, there were two times that I had to go before Cmdr Bishop for mistakes I made in the Navy and the first time he made me feel like he had known me my whole life, I immediately liked him, he was just and fair with me and from that time on I was comfortable with him. The second time I went before him was pretty much the same. I had disobeyed an order and was written up and justly so. We were steaming back to Norfolk after our Indian Ocean deployment and due back in five days. I remember what he said to me, he knew that just days before my wife had delivered our first baby and he would not fine me because of that. He gave me ten days restriction to the ship with five days at sea and five days at Norfolk with a stern lecture on the importance of always carrying out an order when directed regardless of how injust it may seem, then make your feelings known. He even let me go to the Portsmouth Navel hospital to visit my wife and son as there had been complications. In 1987 it was Cmdr Bishop who made it possible for me to work in commercial nuclear power, a position I made a career out of. I’m so honored that I got to know him that I’ve grieved his passing when I got the news. Ron Bishop, Commander, Husband, Father, and Grandfather had a positive influence in my life and I shall miss him. Jim Smith 26 May 2022

I would like to send my sincerest condolences to the family of Commander Ron Bishop. I thought of Commander Bishop many times over the last 30 years. He is a caring, just, compassionate and gracious person. It was a pleasure to serve him on USS John King. Fair winds and Following Seas, ,"Captain Crunch" (you had to be there).

I want to express my sincerest condolence for the family of Commander Ron Bishop. I served on the USS John King in the early 80s and Commander Ron Bishop was the Captain. He was an upright and just leader that had a positive influence on my life as a young sailor. I will never forget him
