Robert Bruce Pettyjohn (Bruce) passed away peacefully at home in Hayes, Virginia on Thursday, October 12, 2023. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on April 18, 1935. Bruce graduated from the University of Virginia and served in the US Army.
Bruce’s career included working in the textile industry, banking, and he finished his career with Ethan Allen Furniture in sales management. Bruce is known for his loving, kind, and adventurous spirit. He loved his family, friends, and all his feline children. He preferred being in the outdoors hiking in the mountains or sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and up in Maine.
Bruce believed in ensuring boaters were safe on the water and served in leadership roles with Flotilla 64 Coast Guard Auxiliary from 1988 to 2007. After retirement, Bruce became an avid photographer and focused on beautiful flower, animal, and landscape creations. His laughter was infectious, and he truly loved life.
Bruce is predeceased by his parents, Charles Raine and Mildred Hudson Pettyjohn, and his siblings; Mrs. Mary Jane Stubbs and Charles Raine Pettyjohn Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly forty-three years, Susan, and his two children, Elizabeth Torrey Greene, and Robert Bruce Pettyjohn, Jr. and his wife, Katherine.
Bruce’s remains will be interred at Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg, Virginia and a gathering of friends will be planned at a later date.
