Chester “Chet” Dale Sutphin, 71, passed away on Monday, April 29, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. Chet, the youngest son of Mack and Evelyn Sutphin, was born on January 22, 1953. He was born and raised in the small town of Myrtle Point, Oregon along with his two older brothers, Craig and Steve. He often recounted stories of his childhood adventures with his brothers. Chet attended Myrtle Point High school, where he was an accomplished athlete in track and football. He met the love of his life while attending Myrtle Point High School. Chet married his high school sweetheart, Shari Martinka, on September 9, 1972. Shortly after they married, Chet enlisted in the United States Air Force and quickly rose through the ranks. He retired as a Chief Master Sergeant after thirty years of proud service to his country in 2005.
Chet and Shari made their home wherever the military sent them. They ultimately settled in Yorktown, Virginia. Together, they raised two daughters, Rachel Ann (June 16, 1975) and Amy Michelle (January 12, 1977). He loved being a dad and was extremely close to both of his daughters. One of his greatest joys in life was being a papa to his six grandchildren: Blake Matthew (June 6, 2004), Braedon Thomas (June 9, 2004), Ashtyn Nicole (February 15, 2006), Savanna Raye (August 31, 2006), Kylie Paige (October 10, 2008), and Kelsie Grace (October 10, 2008). He never missed a game, award ceremony, or school event involving his grandchildren.
Chet had a great sense of humor. Whether it was a backyard barbecue, a golf trip, or a family vacation, he was the life of the party. In addition to spending time with his family, Chet was an avid fisher and golfer. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and papa who enhanced the lives of those who knew and loved him.
Chet is survived by his wife Shari; children Rachel and Amy; grandchildren Blake, Braedon, Ashtyn, Savanna, Kylie, and Kelsie; brothers Craig and Steve.
Chet was proceeded in death by his parents, Mack and Evelyn Sutphin, and his son-in-law, Thomas Swords.
