Barbara Redner Sherin, age 90, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 24, 2024, in Chesapeake, Virginia. Known to her large family and many friends as “Bo” or “Boma,” she was born in Central Valley on October 7, 1933 to Percy and Helen Pierce Redner. She studied Fine Art at Syracuse University and fashion design at Traphagen School of Fashion in New York City. In 1955, she married Justin Marius Sherin of Woodbury, New York. They were married for 50 years, residing in Monroe, Marathon and Stuyvesant Falls, New York and Powder Springs, Georgia. They raised five children together: Justin Jr., Keith, Kim, Kerry, and Kris. Justin predeceased her in 2005.

“Bo” was a gifted painter, very creative craftsperson, and avid fan of all sports, especially those coached by Justin or the many played by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She followed the Yankees from spring training to their World Series parades, loved playing golf everywhere with family and friends, made a “Hole in One,” enjoyed board games, cards and scrabble, walked three to five miles a day at parks and through neighborhoods, canoed, skied, and taught arts and crafts, She relished anything lobster, a big salad, water, white zinfandel wine and all flavors of ice cream — But her favorite activity of all, she said, was being a mother and grandmother. She was extremely proud of her children and grandchildren and their loving families, and she never forgot their many passions and accomplishments.

Barbara was famously competitive, fiesty and funny, and she loved life. She always had to be doing something and was always up for an adventure. She loved traveling the world with Justin and then her children and grandchildren, touring and experiencing the many cultures throughout the United States, Canada, Thailand, Mexico, Europe, Africa, and China. In recent years, Barbara suffered from dementia and resided at the VERO in Chesapeake, VA. The VERO facilities and staff provided her with an exceptional environment to live her best life. She maintained her physical strength and competitive spirit. She played scrabble, stayed very active, and was still walking the VERO hallways or around Oak Grove Lake or golfing with Justin Jr. and friends up until the week before she entered hospice. She had a very rich life because of all the people she touched and all that touched her.

Barbara is survived by her sons Justin Sherin Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA and Keith Sherin of Chatham, Mass. and Naples, Florida, and her daughters, Kimberly Sherin of Chesapeake, VA., Kerry Sherin Wright of Lancaster, PA., and Kris Wooten of Marietta, Georgia; their spouses Kim Van Goidtsnoven, Janet Wills Sherin, Rita Phoenix, R Scott Wright, and Todd Wooten, and her grandchildren Nick Van Goidtsnoven, Joey Van Goidstnoven, Jacob Sherin, Zachary Sherin, Maggie Sherin, Rena Phoenix, Skyler Wright, Kyle Wooten, and Connor Wooten. She will be missed.

Upon her death, Boma was cremated. Barbara’s funeral and interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery where she will be reunited with Justin Sr. The date and time will be shared once known. Barbara’s family would like to thank all of Barbara’s friends, her caregivers, and the incredible VERO staff who made the end of her life as joyful as it could be.

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to the National Park Foundation for others to enjoy travel and build memories around the United States.
