Aubrey Shelton, Jr. , age 72, passed away on August 13, 2024. He died quietly at home in his sleep following a 7 year challenge with cancer. Aubrey was born on August 18, 1951 in Norfolk, VA to the marriage of Dr. Aubrey and Betty Shelton; he was the 3rd of 4 children born to this union. He graduated from Granby High in 1970 and went on to study Communicating Arts & Design at VCU. After graduating he worked at multiple advertising agencies and opened Shelton Advertising with his wife Jill in 1987.

Aubrey married the love of his life Jill Shelton in 1984. He has been the beloved father figure to her three children, Stan Lugar, Laura Schneider, and Will Lugar.

Aubrey loved to volunteer- he was on the Board of the Virginia Beach CERT. He was also President of the FBI Citizens Academy three years. He had a passion for gardening.

He exuded positivity and perseverance with everything he did. He loved deeply and truly with all his heart. His smile lit up the room. Despite the ravages of cancer, he was sharp and funny until his very last days.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Jill; his three siblings Bruce Shelton, Lynda Shelton Gunn, and Ron Shelton, his three step children, and a host of in-laws, nephews and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Association For Research and Enlightenment, located at 67th St. and Atlantic Avenue, Virginia Beach, on Thursday, August 29, at 2 PM. I have known and admired Aubrey (and Jill) since around the early 80's. Aubrey always had a smile and spoke in an engaging manner. I have not seen him in years, but we regularly exchanged funny and political memes, and both had great commentary on those items. I already miss that banter. R.I.P. my friend.

To Jill and family and friends who will continue to miss Aubrey's presence here, I am sending you all unlimited hugs and comforting thoughts now and in the coming days. We were all so lucky to have met such an incredible human. I have so many fond memories of spending time with both Aubrey and Jill, and I reflect on those times now. When I mourn his loss because of their impact, I am a better professional and undoubtedly a better person. Let us tackle the world and challenges of the world the way he did with humor and strength and never hesitate to start up a conversation with a stranger or smile just because.

I am sorry for your loss. I met Aubrey in the 1980s when I was doing work with the Virginia Wildlife Federation, he helped us set up advertising and a public information statement. His father, Dr Shelton was my doctor from the 1950s to the early 1970s. Both were gentlemen I had the honor of knowing.
