She is survived by her husband of sixty (60) years of marriage, Fred Bartels; her children, Rick Bartels and Beth Bartels-Klein (Ian Gove); and her sister, Kathy O’Connell Carter. Her greatest joys were her granddaughters, Autumn, Jewel, and Brooke Bartels, who will carry forward her spirit and strength. Maureen found purpose and passion as a past President of the Poquoson Art League, where she poured her heart into nurturing creativity and community

She was a beautiful human being. She was loving and tried to bring a beautiful peaceful presence to all that knew her. Always with jokes to make light. I will miss the times when she was able to be present and be my mother and best friend.
