Born at Cheektowaga, NY, Mr. Diakun was a graduate of the University of Buffalo, with advanced studies at The George Washington University and Cleveland State University. He was a retired managing partner in the Scaapader Group, and former Budget Director, Assistant Treasurer, and acting Treasurer and Comptroller of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. He was a decorated Army officer veteran of the Korean War.
Involved in his community, Mr. Diakun influenced countless youth as a coach and mentor for more than 18 years in Williamsburg and York County. He was an active member of Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg. He loved and greatly influenced his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was loved and greatly influenced by them. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Anna (Eleczko) Diakun, by his sons Andrew Carver Diakun and Richard Dana Diakun, and by his brother Andrew Diakun and his sister Emily Diakun Paolini. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth Wing Carver Diakun, by his sons, Alan Nicholas Jr. (Elizabeth Bullock) of Murphy, NC, Charles Edward of Falls Church, VA, Peter Christopher (Connie Spangler) of Williamsburg, VA, Stephen Hamilton (Janice Pupo) of Richmond, VA, and David Ross (Cheryl Ramos) of Manassas, VA, and by 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
A service of celebration and thanksgiving for his life will be held at 1 pm on Saturday July 19, 2025 at historic Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, followed by interment in the churchyard. The family will then receive friends and other family at the Custis House. Memorials may be made in Mr. Diakun’s honor to the Andrew Carver Diakun Perpetual Book Fund at the Williamsburg Regional Public Library or to Bruton Parish Church.

Dear Aunt Betty and all our dear cousins,
How we will miss Uncle Nick!
I just loved the way, each and every time – if I were fortunate to be the one to pick up the phone, or on a more rare occasion, the one to greet him at Mom’s door – Uncle Nick would instantly exclaim, with the timbre of a trombone, “Sooooooo-zy!!!” – punctuated with a crescendo and at least three exclamation points at the end!!! As Uncle Nick’s voice resonates with me now, I know for sure his wonderfully exuberant greeting will continue to ring in my heart – and I’ll remember all the great smiles Uncle Nicky has brought to our faces throughout our lives.
So many stories to share of Andy, Em and Nick! What a remarkable trio! How lucky for all of us to be touched by their infinite wisdom and grace.
