William Thomas “Tom” Spear Sr., known as Tom, Tommy, and DA, passed away suddenly on June 25, 2025, in Williamsburg, Virginia, at the age of 86. Tom’s life was a tapestry of history, love, and faith, woven together with threads of passion and devotion.
Born in Kinston, NC on November 27, 1938, Tom was the second son of Annie Blanche Herring Spear and Randolph Denard Spear, Sr. He graduated from Grainger High School and attended college, in the family tradition, at Wake Forest College. The story he loved to share with his granddaughters is that he missed his childhood sweetheart, Mary Frances, so much he left Wake Forest, returned home to marry her, and joined the family business, Spear’s Sporting Goods. Tom married Mary Frances Gaylor April 3, 1960, and they welcomed their only son, William Thomas Spear, Jr., (Willie, Will), on October 11, 1961.
He continued his education at Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, NC. He received his BA from ACC, where he was a member of Alpha Chi Honor Society, and Pi Gamma Mu National Social Science Honor Society, graduating Magna Cum Laude in May 1968.
When the family closed Spear’s Sports in the early 1980’s, Tom and Mary Frances moved to Williamsburg , where Tom pursued his love of history, turning it into a lifelong career as a Historical Interpreter at Colonial Williamsburg. His work there wasn’t just a job; it was a mission to bring the past to life, enriching the lives of countless visitors with stories of our shared heritage. Tom celebrated his 41st year with Colonial Williamsburg in June of the year. Tom considered CW a calling, often stating he was born in the wrong century. He was known for his intelligence, honesty and quick wit, taking new Interpreters under his wing to share his wisdom. He was known by his peers as kind, gentle and it has been said that he was the truest example of a Southern Gentleman.
Tom had an insatiable curiosity for history that extended far beyond his work. He loved traveling to historic sites, savoring the knowledge and beauty each had to offer. His journeys were a testament to his belief that understanding the past enriches our present and shapes our future. A devout Christian, Tom’s faith was a cornerstone of his existence, guiding him through life’s trials and triumphs. His unwavering belief in the Lord provided him solace and strength, influencing all who knew him. He often told his family “when I get to Heaven don’t cry for me down here because I will be home”.
Family was the heart of Tom’s world. Though he faced the profound loss of his beloved wife Mary Frances, his parents Annie Blanche and Randolph, his brothers Denny and Herbie, and his cherished son William Jr., he found joy and purpose in the company of his granddaughters, Megan and Olivia. Spending time with them was among his greatest pleasures, and he inspired them with his wisdom, humor, and unconditional love.
Survived by his loving daughter-in-law Susan Spear and his treasured granddaughters, Megan and Olivia. He is also survived by 2 sister-in laws, Varion Spear and Marilyn Rouse, as well as special nephews, Gram and Bailey Spear, and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Tom leaves behind a legacy of kindness, knowledge, and faith. His spirit will forever linger in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
