James Martin Calvert, born on February 12, 1936, in the peaceful town of Terra Alta, West Virginia, passed away on August 2, 2025, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the age of 89. Surrounded by his loving family, he left this world as he lived his life—full of warmth, love, and cherished memories.
A graduate of Terra Alta High School, James was a man who embraced life with open arms and an unyielding spirit. He moved to Virginia in 1954, where he began working for Sealtest Dairy before joining Mary Jane Bakery. He dedicated many years to his work until retiring in 2018 at the remarkable age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and diligence.
In his younger years, James took judo lessons, a testament to his enthusiasm for learning and personal growth. Throughout his life, he found joy in a diverse array of hobbies—bowling, water skiing, fishing, and shooting pool. His passion for dogs led him to become an obedience training instructor at the Portsmouth-Chesapeake Obedience Training Club during the 1960s, sharing his love and knowledge with others.
James found comfort in simple pleasures: a cup of black coffee, a book in his hand, and the companionship of a cat or dog—or both—on his lap. These moments defined his contented spirit and appreciation for life’s quiet joys.
He was not only a devoted family man but also a proud member of the Freemason Society where he received his Master Mason, degrees at Bayside Lodge No. 218 in 1983. His commitment to his community and values reflected the depth of his character and strength.
Preceded in death by his late parents, Anne Marvin Miller Price and James Enoch Calvert; former wife, Janice Beasley Calvert and brother, William E. Price II.
James leaves behind a family who adored him. He is survived by his wife, Sharon R. Calvert; sister, Starlyn P. Osenbaugh (John); daughters, Deborah S. Calvert, Karen J. Kopf (Paul), Linda C. Woolard (David); three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three stepsons. His enduring love and wisdom will live on in their hearts.
A family remembrance service will be held in Nags Head, NC, at a date and time to be determined. In this gathering, they will celebrate the life of a remarkable man who touched so many lives with kindness and compassion.
James Martin Calvert’s journey through life was inspirational, marked by a resilient heart and a generous soul. His legacy of love and laughter will resonate forever with those who had the privilege to know him.
