David “Monk” Griner, born on September 19, 1955, in Norfolk, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family and pets on August 27, 2025, in Norfolk, Virginia. Monk was a fearless tree climber in his day, not to mention a pool shark any day. Known for being kind and empathetic, he would literally give you the shirt off his back. A die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, Monk’s Sundays were sacred, filled with cheers and a lot of smack talking. When it came to his family, he lived for them, loved them fiercely, and worried about their wellbeing as if it were a full-time job.
Monk is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Knowles; father, Robert Kitchen Griner; brother, Butch Griner; and maternal grandparents, Mildred B. and Walter E. Ellis. He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: his daughter, Leah Guagenti; her mother, Kimberly Griner; son-in-law, Anthony Guagenti; grandchildren: Shawna Guagenti, Shianna Guagenti, and his grandson who was the apple of his eye, Corbin Cooper; sister, Kelly Midgette and her husband, Paul Midgette; nephew, Scott Griner; and numerous great nieces nephews and cousins. Also, let’s not forget his beloved fur babies: Blue, Biscuit, and Moony.
Though Monk has left this world, his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. A Celebration of Life is being planned for Saturday, September 13th at 1:00 pm at Colonial Heights Church of Christ located at 831 Mayfield Ave, Norfolk, VA 23518. Afterwards everyone is welcome to join the family at Monk’s home to continue the celebration. Stories will be shared, laughs will be had, and perhaps a few tears will be shed. Until then, we imagine Monk is up there somewhere, still looking over his family from the best seat in the house. Rest easy Papa Monk, until we meet again.
