Stephenie Modlin Viohl “Big Momma”, 79, went peacefully surrounded by her loving family at her home early Monday morning, October 6, 2025, after declining health from a long-fought battle with cancer. Stephenie was born on September 29th, 1946, in Plymouth, NC.
She was the daughter of Mary Callis Connelley who preceded her in death along with four of her siblings, Margaret Vanlandingham Modlin Wise, Walker Randolph Modlin, Hilda ‘Lisa’ Elisabeth Modlin Collins, and James Russell Modlin. She is survived by her twin brother Stephen ‘Steve’ Llewellyn Modlin & wife Debbie of Chesapeake, VA, and sister Susan Fern Poythress Walters & husband Steve of Kitty Hawk, NC and sister-in-law Carole Wilson Modlin of Lawrenceburg, TN. Cherishing her memory are her daughter, Angela Thomas Hale of Poquoson, VA, and her son, Joshua Adam Viohl and his partner, Kimberly Mulgrew, of Virginia Beach, VA. She was endlessly devoted to the loves of her life—her four grandchildren: Taylor Gage Milinazzo and wife Samantha, Jackie Routh Hale Talarico and husband Anthonie, Monroe Jolie Viohl, and Augustus James Viohl—and her six great-grandchildren: Dominic Angelo Milinazzo, Frank Joseph Milinazzo, Taylor Gage Milinazzo Jr., Remington Reign Milinazzo, Aurora Seraphine Talarico, and Roman Antonio Talarico. She is also lovingly remembered by her bonus children and grandchildren through marriage: Ken and wife Gina Viohl (Hunter and Dominic), and Tracie and husband Lonnie Ingle (Lindsey and Rachel).
Stephenie was a graduate of Great Bridge High School class of 1964. Stephenie was a long-time resident of Virginia Beach, VA where she raised her family & then moved to Suffolk, VA, Myrtle Beach, SC, Painter, VA & then Poquoson, VA where she resided until her passing. She retired after a distinguished 30 year career from the Department of Defense. Stephenie’s children were her life & greatest love until her grandkids & then she found true joy & pure perfect love as their Big Momma! She was kind, independent & tough as nails. She set the example for everyone around her through her integrity, patience, hard work & determination. She loved reading, traveling, astrology, nature, fishing & anything that included the grandkids.
