Howard Lee Todd, 63, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away peacefully after a long illness on October 17, 2025. Born on April 11, 1962, in Dickinson, Alabama, Howard brought joy, laughter, and kindness to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
A proud graduate of Clarke County High School, Class of 1980, Howard carried with him the small-town values that shaped his character—kindness, humility, and a genuine desire to help others. Throughout his life, he was known for his unwavering generosity and willingness to lend a hand without being asked. His warm spirit, compassionate nature, and quiet strength touched the lives of many and will be remembered by all who knew him.
From an early age, Howard was an avid reader. Later in life, he spent a great deal of time sharpening his skills as a writer. Howard had a natural curiosity about the world. He also had a wonderful sense of humor and was known for his quick wit and ability to make people laugh. Whether through a thoughtful conversation or a well-timed joke, he had a way of brightening any room he entered.
Howard was preceded in death by his mother, Rebecca McCaskill Todd. She instilled in him a strong sense of family and compassion. Howard is survived by his loving siblings—Ira Todd Jr of Dickinson, AL; Larry Todd Sr of Newport News, VA; Jimmy Todd of Newport News, VA; Virginia Todd Gaston of Newport News, VA; Mattie Todd Lockett (Thaddeous) of Sweetwater, AL; Jeraldine Todd Dickinson of Calera, AL; and Cecil Todd (Pamela) of Killeen, TX—along with one uncle, Robert McCaskill (Mary) and two aunts, Kathal Joseph (Hillary) and Stella McCaskill. Also, there are many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will cherish his memory forever.
Services will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Home Denbigh Chapel 12893 Jefferson Avenue Newport News, VA 23608 on November 5th 2025 at 11am, to honor Howard’s life and the love he shared with those around him. Though he is no longer with us in person, his laughter, generosity, and kind heart will live on in all who knew him.
