John Daughtry O’Berry, 83, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and lifelong resident of Wakefield, Virginia, entered into eternal rest on November 5, 2025, surrounded by family.

John graduated from Wakefield High School in 1960 and began his career as a typesetter for the Sussex–Surry Dispatch and the Hopewell News. After farming for several years, he opened a service station in Wakefield and later attended barber school in Richmond. He worked in Murphy’s Barber Shop before opening O’Berry’s Barber Shop, where he spent many years serving the community.

His commitment to service continued beyond business. John began a career in law enforcement in 1980 as a Deputy Sheriff for Sussex County, studying to attain his degree from the Crater Criminal Justice Academy at Richard Bland in 1982.  At age 41, he became Sergeant for the Town of Wakefield Police Department, a position he held until leaving to end his work career as a security guard for International Paper.

John lived a life rooted in community. He was a member of the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department, served more than 50 years in the Masonic Lodge, served on the Wakefield Town Council, and was a member of the Wakefield Baptist Church for over 65 years, serving as a Deacon and Trustee. He was also a former Commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, General William Mahone Chapter. Music was one of his greatest joys, and he loved playing guitar, especially with the Scarborough family and friends.

John is survived by his loving wife, Jacqueline Pittman O’Berry; his daughter, Jennifer Lee O’Berry; his grandson, Johnathan Givens Ham; and nieces and nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John H. and Alma Lassiter O’Berry, and his brother, Donald L. O’Berry.

John will be remembered for his quiet strength, his generosity, and his dedication to the community he loved.

A memorial service/celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday, November the 15th at 2 o’clock at the Wakefield Baptist Church, Wakefield, VA.  Cremation Society of Virginia, Chesapeake Office, is assisting the family at their time of need.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department, Wakefield Baptist Church, or the Waverly Rescue Squad in appreciation for their love, care, and support.  Friends and family may send online condolences and memories at www.vacremationsociety.com.
