Velma Rhea Jones, born on December 2, 1937, in Marshall County, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2025, in Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 87.
Velma’s life was a testament to the beauty found in simplicity and the strength derived from love and family. She began her journey as a teacher, imparting knowledge and nurturing young minds. However, it was as a homemaker that she truly flourished, dedicating her life to creating a warm and loving environment for her family.
Her hands were never idle, always tending to her beloved garden or crafting beautiful pieces through her sewing. Velma found joy in the quiet moments, cultivating life and creativity with patience and care. Her garden was a reflection of her soul—vibrant, nurturing, and full of life.
Velma was preceded in death by her devoted husband, John R. Jones; her parents, Athey and Margaret Harper; and her siblings, Frances Savage, Eddie Harper, Gene Harper, and Otis Harper. Their memories remained cherished in her heart.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience in her children, Anthony Jones, Brian Jones, and Michele Jones; her cherished grandchild, Tracey Kelley; and her great-grandchild, Troy Kelley. Her nieces, Velton Shaw, Teresa Thompson, and Sarita Savage, also carry forward her spirit and the lessons she imparted.
Velma Rhea Jones lived a life rich with love, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her gentle strength and unwavering dedication to her family will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
