Sandra Hall McConnell, affectionately known as Sandy, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, in Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 66. Born on February 12, 1959, in Newport News, Sandy was a cherished daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend who touched the lives of many with her warmth and kindness.
Sandy grew up in Newport News and graduated from Gloucester High School in 1977. She dedicated over two decades of her life to serving others as a medical office assistant with Riverside Medical Group, where she was admired for her dedication and compassion.
In her personal life, Sandy found joy in the simple pleasures. She was an avid reader and enjoyed spending her quiet moments with a good book. Her talent for crocheting brought comfort and beauty to those around her, and she delighted in creating handmade treasures for her loved ones. Above all, Sandy cherished the time spent with her grandsons, Robert and Noah, who were the light of her life.
Sandy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim McConnell; her father, Paul William Hall; and her mother, Bertie Clements Hall. She leaves behind a loving family who will forever hold her memory dear: her daughter, Bridget Thornton, and her husband Lawrence; her son, Chris McConnell, and his wife Erica; her treasured grandsons, Robert and Noah McConnell; her niece, Karen Hall; and her best friend, Barbara Markot, and her husband Jeff.
Though Sandy’s current residence was in Johns Island, South Carolina, her heart remained in Newport News, where she began and ended her life’s journey.
In accordance with her wishes, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Sandy’s name to a local animal shelter or rescue of your choice, honoring her love for animals and her generous spirit.
Sandy’s gentle soul and loving nature will be deeply missed, but her legacy of kindness and love will continue to inspire all who knew her.
