Ellen Wheeley Preston was born on August 22, 1949, in Virginia Beach, VA, and passed away peacefully at home in the same city she cherished on January 8, 2026, at the age of 76. Ellen’s life was a tapestry of love, dedication, and quiet strength, woven together with the threads of family, friendship, and hard work.
A talented seamstress by trade, Ellen lovingly created countless wedding and bridesmaid dresses, each stitch a testament to her immense skill, patience, and care. Through her business, “No Shortcuts,” she brought beauty to life’s most meaningful celebrations, leaving a legacy that will be cherished every time one of those special gowns is worn or remembered.
In addition to her craft, Ellen spent over two decades as a beloved bartender and waitress at the Beach Pub, where her warm smile and kind heart touched the lives of many patrons and colleagues. Her commitment to her work was unwavering; she never missed a day.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Ellen’s life was rich with interests and community involvement. She was an avid bunco player, delighting in the camaraderie of her monthly games and the occasional win. A devoted football fan, she passionately supported the Redskins, even as they changed their name, sharing the joy of the game with her dear companion, Scott.
Ellen had a green thumb and took great pleasure in nurturing her garden filled with vibrant flowers and lush plants. She was also an active member of the VFW, where she contributed her culinary talents as a cook and waitress. Her evenings came alive with dancing at the Moose Lodge, where she met her fiancé, Scott Lewis, with whom she shared ten joyful years of companionship.
Bowling was another of Ellen’s passions; she participated enthusiastically in a league, bringing her spirit of fun and joy to each game.
Ellen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gary Preston; her parents, Robert and Evelyn Wheeley; and her brothers, Richard, Bobby, and Jeff Wheeley. She leaves behind a loving family, including her sons, Daryl Sherwood and his wife, Paula, Jason Sherwood, and Robin Sherwood and his fiancée, Lisa Hahn; her three cherished grandchildren; her sisters, Karen Baardsgaard and her husband, Terry, Debbie Sherwood and her husband, Jeff, and Patricia Watts and her husband, Billy. She is also survived by her dear companion, Scott Lewis.
Ellen will be remembered for her gentle heart, her devotion to family, and the love she generously shared throughout her life. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
