James Babick, “Last Cast,” passed away on January 20, 2026, following two years of declining health. He is survived by the love of his life, Susan, his wife of 38 years.
He was an avid surf fisherman (known as “Last Cast”) and loved fishing all day on his favorite beach spots with Susan, enjoying the beach, nature, and catching lots of fish. He also fished his solitary spots early then came home to cook those fish. He had exceptional knowledge of fishing and loved sharing his fishing wisdom with others. It seemed fishing was his art, and he was the artist.
He retired after 30 years with Ford, Norfolk being his last plant. And then enjoyed 33 years of retirement.
He and Susan enjoyed visiting national parks, islands, and loved hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, biking, and especially enjoyed a month in Ireland celebrating Susan’s retirement. These were just some of their adventures. He absolutely embraced nature.
He told Susan many times that their life together was wonderful and every day was a gift, adding “that’s why they call it The Present.”
He was a pure, unselfish soul. Soar with the angels, My Love.
Memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad.
