Suffolk, VA  –  Walter “Walt” John Garwood, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2026, in Suffolk, Virginia, at the age of 68. Born on November 1, 1957, in San Diego, California, Walt lived a life full of dedication, passion, and creativity.

Walt grew up in Wisconsin, where he developed a lifelong love for the Green Bay Packers. He proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Navy, dedicating 20 years to service before retiring with honor. Following his military career, Walt worked as a Journeyman and Maintenance Technician at Obici Hospital in Suffolk, Virginia, where he was known for his skill and dedication.

Walt was a man of many interests and talents. A true car enthusiast, he cherished his ’67 Mustang and spent countless hours perfecting it. His artistic spirit shone brightly through his painting, most notably in the beautiful mural of Noah’s Ark he created for the Children’s Youth room at Faith Lutheran Church, where he was a devoted member.

Walt is preceded in death by his loving parents, Elbert Garwood and Marian Vernon Smith Kassak. He is survived by his devoted wife, Cynthia Jean Longsworth Garwood; his cherished daughter, Lauren Garwood (Alex) of Suffolk, VA; his adopted son, Michael Garwood of New York; his sister, Sharon Storm of Wisconsin; his brother, Denny Garwood of California; his brother-in-law, Kurt Longsworth (Faith) of Chesapeake, VA; and his beloved grandchildren, Bryson and Braelynn, who brought immense joy to his life.

A celebration of Walt’s life will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, located at 2730 Bridge Rd., Suffolk, VA, on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow. A private family service with military honors will take place at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA, at a later date.  Instead of flowers, per Walt’s request, please make donations to the American Red Cross or Wounded Warrior Project in his memory.
