Jodie Mae Self, born Jodie Mae Jenkins, passed away in her home in Newport News, VA on March 25, 2026. She passed peacefully in her sleep at just 61 years old.
Jodie was born in Germany to her loving mother, Sarah MacCallum with whom she spent her final years in their shared home in Newport News, VA. Jodie was a tax accountant, a caregiver for any child who needed a place to be, and an excellent cook.
Jodie was a vibrant and passionate person who laughed loudly and often. She was an adventurous spirit who loved road trips, live music, and a party. Jodie could make a friend anywhere, from a cruise ship deck to the checkout line at the DMV, she never met a stranger.
Jodie was a complex person but she did the very best she could with the life she was given. She felt things deeply and never shied away from saying exactly what was on her mind. Her love for her kids was no exception to this. Jodie was the mother to four children of whom she was immensely proud and loved to brag about to anyone who would listen. She was also a “mom” to so many more. Her home had an open door policy to all the neighborhood kids and anyone else who needed a safe place to go.
A lover of life, backstage access, the San Francisco 49ers, and the back of a motorcycle, Jodie found adventure and thrill anywhere should could. She was a talented sketch artist and an avid reader who taught her children the importance of being independent, enjoying life, and being true to who you are, whoever we chose to be. She had an open heart and accepted people exactly as they are without judgement.
Jodie is survived by her mother, Sarah MacCallum; her four children, Candice Hope Annette Cox, Logan James Chappell, Meesha Danielle Self, and Ronny Kay; her 8 beautiful grand children, Kendall Myers, James Cox, Katlyn Cox, Victoria Cox, Michael Cox, Maximus Chappell, Atlas Chappell, and Jolene Chappell; and the many friends she leaves behind across the country from California to Virginia.
A memorial will be held to honor Jodie’s life at Hoss’s Deli on Sunday, March 29th at 11am for as long as you want to stay. We can’t think of any way she’d rather us spend these moments celebrating her. Jodie wished to be cremated, there will be no formal burial or services.
