George Edward Leuchte of Virginia Beach passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026 at the age of 90. He was born on August 31, 1935 in Massachusetts to the late Frances (née Patten) and Paul Leuchte. Preceding him in death were his brothers, Paul and Peter Leuchte, and his sister, Marjorie Williams.
George grew up in South Boston and was the oldest of 10 siblings. He was a dutiful son in helping raise his siblings, working at an early age digging clams and selling newspapers. He attended Catholic elementary and high school as well as Boston College. He then attended St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts and was ordained on August 31, 1963.
George dedicated his life to service, both to his country and his faith. He served with distinction as a Lieutenant Commander and Chaplain in the United States Navy, where he provided spiritual guidance and support to many during the Vietnam War. His commitment to his fellow servicemen and women was unwavering, reflecting his deep sense of duty and compassion. In addition to his military service, George was a chaplain with the Knights of Columbus in Boston, Massachusetts and Norfolk, Virginia.
George led an interesting life and had so many wonderfully fantastic stories of his adventures, including growing up in “Southie” (South Boston) during the era of Whitey Bulgur and the Winterhill Gang, meeting Jimi Hendrix hanging out playing guitar in a music store, and playing guitar with Joan Baez – allegedly teaching her a few songs – in Bermuda.
George is survived by his beloved life partner, Nancy “Ann” M. Patch. He also leaves behind his siblings: Richard Leuchte (Joanne), William Atkinson (Karen), Charlie Leuchte, Joseph Leuchte (Carolyn), Louise McKenna, and Debbie Borick. He will be fondly remembered by his sister-in-law, Helen Leuchte; his niece, Sharene Hebb-Orgel; his great-niece, Meredith Rose Orgel; and his great-nephews, Christopher Hebb and Nicholas Orgel. He is also survived by his stepchildren: Frank Patch, Jr. (LeaAnn), John Patch (Diane), Andrew Patch (Barbara), and Jacqueline Patch (Kent), who cherished him as a guiding figure in their lives. George’s love extended to his cherished pets, including his huskies, Shadow, Tasha, and Bella and his cats, Misty, Ivan, and Socks, who brought him joy and companionship. George’s legacy of service, faith, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Per his wishes, his ashes will be interred at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia. A Celebration of life will be held at Lake Christopher Park in June. Invitations will be sent by the family.
