Jeanette Pierce Carpenter, 89, of Hampton, VA, went to be with the Lord on May 8, 2026. Jeanette was born on March 14, 1937, in Sunbury, NC to Milton and Lyda Pierce. As a young girl, she moved with her parents to Hampton, where she attended Hampton City Public Schools. At the age of 17, while still a senior in high school, Jeanette married Elvin Ray Carpenter. Despite the challenges of marrying so young, she excelled academically and earned the honor of valedictorian of the graduating class of 1955, however, school officials would not allow her to deliver the valedictory speech because she was married. Jeanette went on to work as a secretary in the Engineering Department at NASA before starting a family with her husband.
Jeanette’s life was marked by unwavering faith, humility, compassion, and a quiet strength that was so admired by her children and anyone that met her. For many years, she faithfully led young women in the Titus Bible Study Class at her church, encouraging generations with her knowledge of scripture, her gentle spirit, and her steadfast devotion to God.
Jeanette was known for her quick wit and deep love for her family. Nothing brought Jeanette greater joy than being surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, sharing stories, laughter, and the love that held her family together.
Jeanette is survived by her children: Christian Blade Carpenter and wife Sophie; Dawn Carpenter Miller and husband Ski Miller; Kelly Bray Carpenter and wife Christa; and Steven Ray Carpenter and wife Joy. She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin Ray Carpenter, and son, Robert Clay Carpenter.
A service to celebrate Jeanette’s life will be held at Calvary Assembly of God, 1380 N. Mallory Street, Hampton, VA on Monday, May 18th at 5:30 in the evening. Refreshments and fellowship to follow. Family and friends are invited to join in honoring and remembering a woman whose faith and love touched so many lives.
Upon Jeanette’s entrance into heaven, no doubt the Lord proclaimed, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”
