Anson Taylor “AT” Knowles, Sr., a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2026, in Norfolk, Virginia, at the age of 91. Born on December 21, 1934, in Roper, North Carolina, AT lived a life marked by dedication to his family, community, and country.
AT proudly served his country in the United States Army, demonstrating the values of duty and honor that would guide him throughout his life. Following his military service, he embarked on a career with the Norfolk Police Department, where he served as a detective until his retirement. His commitment to public service continued as he dedicated over 50 years to Farm Fresh, where he worked as a manager until his second retirement. Outside of his professional life, AT was a respected member of the Kempsville Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Novella White Knowles, whose memory he cherished deeply. AT is survived by his loving children: Andy Knowles (Terri), Beth Edens, and Timmy Knowles (Debbie). He also leaves behind nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, who were the pride and joy of his life. His brother, Bill Knowles, and sister, Peggy Hitt, along with his devoted caregiver, Ruth Edwards, also mourn his passing.
In accordance with AT’s wishes, services will be private. The family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in his honor to your favorite charity, reflecting his generous spirit and lifelong commitment to helping others.
