Doris Jane (Herzing) DePanfilis, 88, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, May 22, 2026, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital following a brief illness. Born August 13, 1937, in St. Marys, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Urban and Jennie (Mumford) Herzing.
Doris graduated from St. Marys High School in 1955 and worked on the production line at Stackpole Carbon Company. She married Ronald DePanfilis of Ridgway, Pennsylvania, on November 12, 1960. She was predeceased by her husband, Ronald, in 1994, and by her sisters, Betty Wagner and Patricia Davis.
Doris was a devoted mother and homemaker who enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing bridge, and traveling with family. Her affection for Bella, the resident Jack Russell terrier, was measured largely in treats. The family shared many gatherings at their vacation house in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where Doris worked part-time as a housekeeping inspector at the Outer Banks Beach Club.
She is survived by her children, Jayne DePanfilis (David Glover) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Cara DePanfilis (Robert Ingram) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Richard DePanfilis of Virginia Beach, Virginia; her sister, Carol Minnick of St. Marys, Pennsylvania; Richard DePanfilis’s children, Anthony, Nicolena, Amanda Stewart, and Ethan Shuster; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
The family thanks the staff of Living Well Assisted Living for their kindness and care.
Doris will be laid to rest alongside her husband at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, St. Marys, Pennsylvania. No services are planned. Condolences may be offered at Virginia Cremation Society, www.vacremationsociety.com.
