Virginia Beach, VA – Alma Jane Hollingsworth 88, passed away on May 25, 2026. Born on October 2, 1937, in Maysville, Oklahoma, Alma was the daughter of Raymond and Addlee Cowan.
Alma made her home in the Kempsville area of Virginia Beach, where she raised her family and lived for more than 50 years. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who touched many lives with her kindness and caring spirit.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Addlee Cowan; her brother, Raymond Earl Cowan; her beloved husband, Jack; and her daughter, Becky Jean Hogg.
Alma is survived by her son, David Cowan and his wife, Kim; her daughter, Amy Hampton and her husband, John; her grandchildren, Katherine Hogg, Samuel Hogg, Hailey Cowan, Hunter Cowan, Caroline Hampton and Natalie Hampton; her sisters, Mary and Sharon; her brother, Allon; and many extended family members.
A graduate of Norview High School, Class of 1956, Alma later fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse. After graduating from nursing school in June 1977, she worked at Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital for more than 18 years until her retirement in 1996.
Alma found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved gardening and spending hours in her yard meticulously raking pine straw. She enjoyed long walks, traveling, and especially the adventure of cruising, having taken eleven cruises throughout her lifetime. Some of her happiest memories were made on road trips with her sister Mary, exploring new places and sharing laughter along the way. In her later years, she treasured dinners, outings, and companionship with her good friend Richard at Atlantic Shores.
Alma also took great pride in her appearance. Whether she was headed to dinner, meeting friends, or simply going about her day, she enjoyed looking her best. Her family will remember her sense of style, attention to detail, and the care she took in presenting herself. She loved listening to oldies music and dancing in the kitchen with her daughter Amy. Her family also fondly remembers the many hours she spent helping her son David warm up before baseball games and cheering him on from the sidelines.
The family finds comfort in knowing that Alma’s loving spirit, gentle smile, and devotion to those she loved will never be forgotten. Her legacy lives on in the lives of her children, grandchildren, family, and friends who were blessed to know her.
A private Celebration of Life to honor Alma will be held at a later date. Cremation Society of Virginia is assisting the family at their time of need. Friends and family may share online condolences and memories at www.vacremationsociety.com
