Yoshiko Deaton, affectionately known as Yoshi, died Saturday, October 20, 2018. Yoshi was born January 5, 1938 in Ibalark-Ken, Japan to Hatsu Saito and Yasujiro Saito. After finishing school she worked in the family interior design business and later in retail for office supplies and menswear at the base exchange at Yokota Air Force Base where she met her future husband. Yoshi was married to Wilson Ervine Deaton on June 1, 1966 by Hobart H. Cleveland, Vice Consul of the USA at the American Embassy in Tokyo, Japan. They moved to the United States in 1967 where they were stationed in Apple Valley, California. Yoshi retired from Canon U.S.A., Inc. in 2007 after 20 years of service.
Yoshi was baptized into Christ in December 2007 by The Rev. L Douglas Stowe when she became a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Hampton, Va. She was active in the Altar Guild, Chrismon Ministry and Bible Study. She was a good and willing servant.
Yoshi was most proud of her grandson and best friend, Chase Thresher, who cared for her in her last days. Together they shared many wonderful memories. Chase is grateful to the doctors and nurses who attended Yoshi over her long battle with cancer and the Hospice staff who attended her in her last hours.
Yoshi was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her oldest sister Michiko. She is survived by her grandson, Chase Thresher, a daughter, Lisa, and two granddaughters, Cheyanne Moore and Milisa Heskett in Oklahoma. She is also survived by two brothers, Teduro Saito and Hiro Yoshi Saito, and two sisters, Toshiko Saito and Masako Saito in Japan.
There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Hampton, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Phyllis Milton. There will be a reception following the service at the church.
