Audrey Scruggs Lipscomb, 94, passed away Monday, January 28, 2019 at St. Francis Nursing Center, Newport News, Va. Mrs. Lipscomb was born February 21, 1924 in Richmond, VA to Vernon William Scruggs and Jessie Jeanette (Driskill) Scruggs.  She was the youngest of nine siblings.

Mrs. Lipscomb is survived by her son Lewis “Ned” Lipscomb of Ned’s Marine & Auto Center in Yorktown, VA, and her granddaughter, Heather Lipscomb Bundgaard of Geneva, IL.

   Audrey grew up in Richmond, where she attended nursing school and worked at the Old Dominion Barn Dance, along with June Carter. Audrey married Lewis “Lou” Lipscomb in the early 1940’s in Richmond, VA.  He was a member of the Richmond Police Department and the first motorcycle policeman in Richmond, VA. While serving in law enforcement, Lou and Audrey lived in Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina and Florida, and finally planted roots in Hampton, VA. In the early 1970’s Audrey and Lou founded and ran Lipscomb Detective Agency, where they worked and served the community for more than 3 decades. Even after the death of her husband, she grew the business to over 100 employees by 1992.

In addition, Audrey served 8+ years as the President of the Virginia Security Association (VSA), which supported security and law enforcement through legislation, education, and training support. VSA was founded in part by her husband, Lou, in the late 1960’s. VSA is currently affiliated with the Criminal Justice Department Services. As an involved member of the community, she served on the Hampton City Council from 1964 – 1965. After selling her business to Atlantic Protection Services (APS), Audrey continued to run the APS peninsula office for over 8 years.

She was also the Secretary and Treasurer for Ned’s Marine and Auto Center for more than 40 years. Audrey retired from the workforce just 3 months prior to her 90^th birthday.

Being dog lovers, the Lipscomb household could always be found with at least one retired K9 in its family.

Even in retirement, Mrs. Lipscomb continued to remain active in her community. In her later years, she moved into Sinclair Gardens in Hampton and her gift for finance had her helping her many community members manage their finances “to the penny” as her son Ned states. Her love of numbers also encouraged her participation in weekly poker games with her neighbors and friends. Audrey didn’t stop there. Every Tuesday and Thursday, she would take her friends in her van to the grocery store. And on Tuesdays, a Chinese lunch outing became a favorite for her and her friends. Throughout her 94 years, Audrey could be found spending her days enjoying Country and Bluegrass music, traveling, playing card games, and spending time with friends and family. Mrs. Lipscomb spent the past two years at St. Francis Nursing Center in Newport News, VA where she and her son, Ned, were loved and cared for by the staff.

   Audrey has chosen to be cremated with a Celebration of Life at an undecided date and location.
