Richard “Rich” Carlson, 41, passed peacefully into the Lord’s arms on May 2, 2019.  The son of a Naval Officer, Rich Carlson was born in 1977 on the island of Okinawa, Japan. In 1979, the family moved to Kempsville in Virginia Beach.  Rich graduated from Kempsville High School, as had his sister, Chrissie Goodrum (Dave) and brother, Daniel Carlson Jr (Laura).  He graduated from Old Dominion University and remained in Virginia Beach.  Rich is survived by his mother, Barbara “Babs” and father, Daniel “Dan Sr.”; his sister and brother and five nieces and nephews.

Rich worked for Versability Resources until the onset of his illness from a brain tumor in July of 2018.  He was an avid Washington Capitals fan and delighted in their winning the Stanley Cup. He also cheered for the Washington Nationals and hoped for a pennant and World Series. Rich was a member of Knights of Columbus and a Friend of Bill.

Rich’s family was very impressed with the comprehensive care provided by the Sentara Healthcare System throughout his illness.  His family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and volunteers at the Sentara Hospice Services for the extraordinary care and compassion they provided during Rich’s last weeks.  We also thank all those Friends who visited Rich at the Hospice Center and filled his last days with warmth and love.

A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on May 25, 2019, at Saint Nicholas Catholic Church, 712 Little Neck Road Virginia Beach, VA.  A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Brain Tumor Society (the button at the top of the page), the Sentara Foundation-Hampton Roads, or the charity of choice.

One day we might be able to conquer and cure brain tumors- once and for all.
