Brenda Gail Adams, 72, of Yorktown, VA, passed away on August 16, 2020 at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, VA. She was born in Troutman, NC on September 10, 1947 and lived her formative years on her family’s farm in Oswalt, NC. She graduated from Troutman High School in 1965 and continued her education at Lenoir Ryhne College where she graduated with a BS in nursing in 1970. She was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force in 1970 and proudly served for seven years as a flight nurse and psychiatric nurse at duty stations in the United States and Europe. In 1983, she was employed by the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Hampton, VA as a psychiatric nurse clinician and retired from the VA in 2018 after thirty-five years of employment. Gail received numerous awards, commendations and certificates during her years as an Air Force nurse and VA clinician, but she was most proud of the appreciation and thanks that she received from her many patients who she had helped during her nursing career.

Gail was a voracious reader and she loved downhill skiing and bicycle touring. She skied many of the “black diamond” runs of the Alps, the Rockies and New England and she was always ready to be the first to lay tracks down the fresh power of a challenging run. When the snow was gone, she could be found riding with her husband on one of their tandem bicycles touring the roads of Europe or the United States.

Gail is survived by Tom Adams, her husband of forty-eight years; brothers, Leonard “Gary” Christie (wife: Connie) of Concord, NC, Ronald Lynn Christie (friend: John) of Troutman, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Leonard Harding Christie; mother, Myrtle Cash Christie; and sister, Doris Jenean Christie Myers.

A private celebration of her life will be held with her immediate family. In her memory, she would ask that you offer some act of kindness to a friend, a neighbor, or to a total stranger and enjoy your life to its fullest.

My deepest condolences. I worked with Gail when I was a resident in the ED and then as staff. I watched her make very difficult decisions everyday. She didn't always make everyone happy but she did her best when other people couldn't advocate for themselves. Because of her I have confidence to come to work everyday to do the same. I hope to make even a fraction of the impact that Gail made in her life. My prayers for your loss.

So very sorry Tom. I will always cherish the memories of our bike rides together. Some day soon, I plan to get a bag of Fretos in her honor. Praying for you.

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Gail. I worked with her at the Hampton VAMC for 10 years. She will truly be missed! Prayers and condolences to her friends and family!

My wife Kathy and I worked at the VAMC for many years. "Gail" as she was known to her co-workers, was reliable, clinically astute, personable and compassionate in all her professional interactions. She touched the lives of many. We will always remember her in our prayers and offer our deepest condolences to her family.

Gail and I worked closely for over 25 years at the Hampton VAMC. She was my go to person who never disappointed. Her dedication, work ethic and passion for helping the veteran were unparalleled. She was fearless. She was dependable. She was kind. She was compassionate. She was smart. These are all traits you want in a nurse, but more importantly in a human being. My condolences to the family. Gail, I will never forget you.

I have worked with RN Adams as a Psychiatry resident in 2010 and then as ER Psychiatrist side by side in 2015. When RN Adams retired I have never find RN who works in the ER with same work ethics like she was. She was a reliable employee, big support to our ER staff, dependable and kind to our Veterans. Rest in peace …...

I had the privilege of knowing Gail during our time at the VA Medical Center, she was a true professional and the go-to person to assist all Veterans that found themselves in the ED. She will be missed and my prayers are offered up to her family. She was a one of a kind! RIH!

Tom, we have fond memories of tandem cycling with you and Gail. So glad our paths crossed at that century ride so many years ago. Recently, Buddy enjoyed her visits and her attention. We have you in our prayers. Gail will be missed.

RIP Gail. My deepest sympathy to her family and friends. While working at the VA in Hampton, I received reports from Gail. She was always courteous and professional. I also had the opportunity to work alongside her to be trained by her to cover her while she was to go on leave. It was a pleasure she trained me well. So much so that I was sorry to leave when she returned. She was a jewel. She will truly be missed. Prayers sent to the family. Gone too soon. Heaven was waiting with open arms.

Gail was a joy to work with in the Hampton V.A. emergency room. She always "pitched in" when needed. She was dedicated to the veterans she came in contact with.

RIP Gail. I also worked with Gail at the VA Hospital in Hampton. She was truly devoted to her patients. Condolences to her family.

My condolences to the family. I got to know Gail when I started my residency in 1991. She loved what she did and she inspired trust in her patients and the many trainees that she came in contact with. Her dedication was legendary.
