Wayne Smith, Ph.D. left a message on August 7, 2022:
While in the process of dedicating one of my books to Dr. Canestrari, I discovered that the great man had passed away in 2020. Dr. Canestrari was the consummate clinical psychologist on the Peninsula for forty years and a powerful force in the field of mental health. In school systems throughout the state and as founder of Colonial Hospital for Children and Adolescents, Dr. Canestrari helped more children in Virginia than any man of his generation.

I wanted to express my condolences to Canestrari family especially to Sally and Maria, Bob was a good man and made the best submarine sandwich.

We were so lucky to meet Bob and Sally 20 years ago in the Florida Keys, where we were both living on boats. We became close friends, traveled far and wide together, vacationed with each other's families, and shared wonderful happy moments. Bob was a wise, humorous, loving man. He never went a day without talking with at least one daughter. He and Sally and Jack shared advice and love with us, as well as lots of laughter. Life will not be the same without him. We wish his whole family love and sympathy, with special wishes from one of our grandsons, Jack, who thought they were the greatest. He still laughs about riding in a car while Sally drove and Bob directed!

I am so blessed to have had Bob and Sally Canestrari as my God parents. My best memories are when our families spent time together as a child. Bob was always a best friend to my father and our family. Hardly a day passed that he would'nt call just to say hello and see how we were doing. He has been the most loyal, sincere and honerable man I have ever known. We will miss him so much in this life and pray he has safe travels from here on

I am so glad to have had the honor of knowing Bob even if only for a few years. Listening to his stories of his childhood and youth as well as early work in his field, gave you a real look at a time gone by. His ability to laugh at himself was catching and he loved to get into discussions of current affairs and how to fix them. He did indeed adore his children and was proud of all of them. He loved his family and it was delightful to watch Sally and him interact. I did not know people of his age rolled their eyes so much! Enjoy your sailing, Bob. We will miss you.
