Michael Alan Caplan

1940 – 2020

Michael passed away at his home on November 25, 2020.

Michael was was born in Scranton, PA on June 10, 1940. He was preceded in death by his parents, Meyer Caplan and Leah Rosenberg Caplan. Michael is survived by his children, Cory, Matthew (wife Rebecca), and Elizabeth (husband Richard); grandchildren, Maybelle and Dottie Jean; sister, Lois (husband Mark); niece, Rachel; cousin, Steve; and mother of his children, Kathi Lee Wilson.

Michael earned his bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University, where he studied literature and advertising. After graduating, he joined the army, where he travelled internationally and served as a photographer. He then moved to New York City, where he built a successful career as a copywriter in the iconic Madison Avenue advertising industry. Michael and his family moved to Virginia Beach in the 80s, where he continued his advertising career at the Christian Broadcasting Network until his retirement.

A master of the English language and a warm, witty friend to all who knew him, Michael was a brilliant writer and passionate patron of the arts. He was a veritable encyclopedia of Hollywood history, and his love for film, theater and music nurtured and inspired the lives and artistic pursuits of his children profoundly. His sense of humor was a singular delight to anyone lucky enough to hear or read one of his puns or punchlines. Michael always wanted those around him feel comfortable and appreciated. He held a special place in his heart for the Big Apple. He loved to share laughter and meals with his family.

Michael was a kind, supportive, loving father. He cherished any time spent with his children and gave them immeasurable comfort and council when they needed him. He was truly one-of-a-kind. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
