On Tuesday, January 8, 2019, Alan Joseph Johnson, husband to Nancy Johnson and father of 3 children, passed away at the age of 78. Alan was born on July 20, 1940 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Alfred and Mary (McDevitt) Johnson. Alan received his Engineering degree from University of New Hampshire in June of 1962. He entered the United States Navy in August of 1962. On December 22 of that same year, he married Nancy Lynn Pettes and they went on to raise 3 children, Chris, Lori and Karen. Alan enjoyed a successful career in the United States Navy with a deployment to Subic Bay, Philippines during Vietnam War, deployments to Indian Ocean on the U.S.S. Mahan and South America on U.S.S. America as Chief Engineer, Advisor at the Naval Post-Graduate school in Monterey, California, in addition to continuing his education receiving degrees in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. In his service, he received Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and National Defense Service Medal. Alan retired from the United States Navy in 1988.

Alan enjoyed traveling, had a passion for cooking, loved theater and music, enjoyed reading books and spending time with his family. He had several hobbies, including carpentry, cooking, and gardening. Alan was known for his quick wit, always had a story to tell and had the answer to whatever question was asked.

Alan was preceded in death by his father, Alfred, his mother, Mary, and his brother, Harold. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, his 3 children, Chris, Lori and Karen, his 7 grandchildren, and his sister, Marilyn.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 19^th at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church. A Military service will take place at Arlington National Cemetery within the year for his final resting. Donations can be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association in lieu of flowers.
