Andrew Broaddus Cooke, Jr. passed away on July 7, 2021 at the age of 92. He was a resident of Westminster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay in Virginia Beach.
Andy was born in Norfolk on November 9, 1928, the son of Andrew B. Cooke and Mary Tunison Niblack. He was a graduate of Maury High School; Virginia Tech; and the Southeastern Theological Seminary.
Andy served in a number of diverse careers: as an engineer at Langley Air Force Base for NASA; pastoring churches in North Wilkesboro, NC, Warsaw, Richmond, and Warrenton, VA; as an agent with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company; and as an instructor of Ethics and Critical Thinking at Bryant and Stratton College.
Nothing was more important to Andy than his family. He was the loving husband of Nan Tignor Cooke for 68 years, and the devoted father of sons Andrew and Scott (deceased 2017), and daughter Karen.
He was a member of Baylake United Methodist Church; he excelled at athletics (track and field; swimming and diving; sailboat racing); he loved music and singing in the church choir; and he was an avid bridge player and an excellent cook. He was optimistic, kind, intelligent, generous of spirit and heart, and he was blessed to live a wonderfully full and meaningful life. He will be missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at 12 noon, in the chapel at Westminster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay, 3100 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, VA, 23451. All are welcome to attend.
