Ann Grace Gurnee, 71, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026. Born on August 26, 1954, in Waukegan, Illinois, Ann was the beloved daughter of William and Nancy Sheldon, who preceded her in death.
In 1980, Ann made Virginia Beach her home, where she built a full and vibrant life and remained until her passing. She was a proud graduate of Old Dominion University and enjoyed a successful career as a commercial property manager, working with several prominent firms before retiring in 2016.
Ann lived life with enthusiasm and joy. She had a true passion—some might say an obsession—for golf, and she rarely missed an opportunity to be on the course. She was also a talented and generous cook who loved bringing people together around food, laughter, and a good drink. Ann cherished traveling the world with her loving husband and dear friends, and playing poker or socializing with an international circle of friends in the Thoroughgood neighborhood she held so close to her heart. She was able to visit many of these international friends in their country.
Above all, Ann treasured her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, Robert Gurnee; her sisters Marrae (Dave), Jill (Rick), and Jane; her adoring daughter Kinsey (Matt); her stepsons Robert (Carrie), Bryan (Caitlyn), and Tyler; and her precious grandchildren Aidan, Addy, Andrew, Sarah, Ruthie, Charlotte, Stella, and Millie. Few things brought Ann more happiness than summertime happy hours around the pool with her grandchildren—whether that meant a piña colada, a cold beer, or a popsicle, depending on age. Also missing her are her SILs Patricia (Stephen) and Susan (William) and her BIL, James.
Ann will be remembered for her warmth, her laughter, her love of friends and family, and the way she made everyday moments feel special.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of one’s choice.
