I will sorely miss my oldest best childhood friend, from the days we climbed trees together in Ashland in the 1940s to hanging out on the Namassin deck with Charley & my Bud in the 1990s. The pandemic did us out of a visit during which she promised we could binge watch the old home movies Dr. Webb obsessively took & which Will (I think) resurrected onto a DVD. (But I may try to come for the memorial.) What a gift to the planet was Ann. Love to you Jenny, Will, Catie & all, from San Francisco.

My Sister Cousin Ann Webb McDowell and I were very close. The times we spent together were like special jewels. The memories we made together will be with me always.
Margaret Mims Hamilton left a message on August 31, 2021:
To the family of Ann McDowell, I send my deepest sympathy to you at this sad time. While I never had the pleasure of meeting Ann, I felt that I new her well because we shared a common friend at the Artists Gallery, Dick Rawls. In addition, my father was a friend of Charley’s for years in Richmond. The loss of our mother is one of life’s most difficult passages no matter our age. May the fact that she lived such a rich and vibrant life sustain you in the months ahead. I hope you will discover for your selves that, while the bodies of the people we love die, the love that we shared with them never dies. They are with us always. May you find peace and comfort from thoughts of how much richer each of your lives is because she was such an important fact of them, With my deepest sympathy, Margaret Mims Hamilton

We miss Ann already, seeing her smiling face in the hallways here at Atlantic Shores, chatting with her about anything and everything, seeing her art work at The Artists Gallery. She was a lovely woman and she was so interested in so many areas of life that were for the good of all. Our thoughts and prayers go to all the family members as they grieve her loss. What a woman! We would like to receive notification of when the celebration of her life will be held in November.

Although it has been some years since I have seen Annie, I remember what an intelligent, active, knowledgeable, vivacious person she was —always a pleasure to be around. She and Charlie were an extraordinary couple-very few like them. Major Reynolds

On behalf of the Northern Virginia Community College, we wish to offer our sincere condolences on the loss of Mrs. McDowell. We are proud that she was one of our photography students and that she went on to earn distinctions in the field of photography and in painting. Both Charley and Ann McDowell were well known and well respected in this area and we are saddened by her loss.

nI am crushed by the loss of a beautiful, witty and caring artist I was so lucky to have shared space with over the years she has been at the Artists Gallery. Most recently, we were sharing the same studio and her gorgeous art decorated the walls I worked in every week. I am lucky to have pieces of her art and even luckier to have memories of the talented, creative person who brought it to life.

I first met Ann as we took a painting class together--she would have been around 80 years old at that time. She gained my admiration from the start--her talent, her sass and her willingness to speak her mind. It was so exciting when she joined us at The Artists Gallery, to have her smarts and talent added to our team. We all feel blessed to have had Ann as a member of our art family and we will all miss her terribly. She was a light and a joy to be around, with a sharp wit and respectful tone. Truly a woman of wisdom and talent. Rest in peace Ann (with your paintbrush and some collaging materials). Our prayers go out to Ann's family and we wish you endless peace and comfort in your memories of Ann. Maggie and Don Kerrigan

When I lived in Richmond many years ago and worked for the women's pages at the News Leader,I took a class from Charley at R.P.I , as it was known then, and he was a wonderful mentor. I later followed his columns from D. C. and on PBS. Much later, here in Virginia Beach, I connected with Ann and followed her work at the Virginia Beach Arts Center. We emailed occassionally and reminisced a little about Charley. The last time we chatted, the plan was to go out for fried oysters. Am sorry we never got that chance. She was a nonpareil!
