Jim Walker left a message on December 1, 2022:
This obituary shocked me. Tony was one of most brilliant and accomplished people I have ever met. We worked closely together for years courtesy of Electric Boat, in Groton and San Diego. I first met Tony in 1975 the day he reported in to Groton after his escape from Vietnam at its end. He struck me immediately as an 'old soul.' I helped him move from New Britain to Groton and subsequently learned a lot about his years in Germany and Vietnam. His out-of-the-box thinking and analyses were something I and most others had not experienced before nor since. Basically, his life, accomplishments and thoughts are a book that should have been written -- perhaps more than one book. He was far above and beyond a military historian. We lost track after the mid-80's, but I reached out from Germany and found him in 2014, and we shared in-depth correspondences for two years about our between times and my years in Germany, Iraq and Afghanistan. Then he stopped responding. I knew he was not a fan of email so I dropped him notes around Christmas for few years after. His last note to me was December 22, 2020, but included no details. I looked forward to continuing our discussions, but nothing followed. However his life ended, I hope it was among family and friends, with some recognition, without pain, and with the knowledge that I held him in highest regard and also as a life-changer.
