Armistead “Doc” Elliott Springer, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday July 15, 2025. Doc was born September 22, 1940, to Vivian and Whilldin Springer in Norfolk, Virginia.
After graduating from Oscar F. Smith High School in South Norfolk, Virginia, he entered the apprentice program and later was employed by Norshipco/BAE Systems for 46 years, retiring as an Outside Machinist Supervisor. He also served in the National Guard Battery 4th Missile Battalion 111th Artillery. People who knew Doc will remember him for his passion for coaching youth sports [South Norfolk Vikings Football and South Norfolk Boys Baseball], gardening, cooking, golfing and his well-known bear hugs. He volunteered to cut the grass at Oscar F. Smith High School Football field. He was a founding member of the South Norfolk Youth Athletic Association. He was a member of the South Norfolk Golf Association. He was in the Chesapeake Sports Club Legends of Honor. He was inducted into the Sports Football Hall of Fame. He was a Master Mason at South Norfolk Masonic Lodge #339.
He was predeceased by his wife, Diane Springer, of 36 years.
Left to celebrate his life are his three sons, Todd and his wife Sonya, Cory and his wife Melissa and Eddie and his partner Samantha. He also leaves behind his life partner, Patsy Weston.
He was a proud Grandfather to Chelsea, Brianna, Christian & Emma and a proud Great Grandfather to Coen, Parker, Reed & Asher. He is survived by his sisters, Marie Judah, Joyce Robinson and Gay Judah, Sister-in-law DiAnn Springer and in-laws, Gary, Jodie, Danny (Edna), Janet & Tommy. He was predeceased by his brother John “Chum” Springer. He was a loving Uncle to Jodi, David, Jill, Angie, Jenny, Ralph, Billy, DeAnn, Mindy, Brian Dunnagan & Eric Dunnagan. He will be missed by many other family, lifelong friends and neighbors.
