Barry Gene Bateman Jr., affectionately known and celebrated by their stage name, Jennifer Dion, passed away on January 10, 2026, in their hometown of Virginia at the age of 38. Born on September 29, 1987, Jen graced the world with their vibrant spirit and boundless creativity.

 A true artist at heart, Jen embraced life as a drag performer where they truly created magic and entrepreneur, captivating audiences with their dazzling performances. They were a master of their craft known as the “The Face of Illusions”, A true visionary, Jen was also an accomplished costume designer, wig designer, and jewelry designer. Their creations were bold, expressive, and unmistakably their own. Every look told a story, reflecting their passion for self-expression and their refusal to dim their light. A beacon within the LGBTQIA+ community, Jen’s influence and charisma touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing them. They were deeply loved and respected, known for fostering friendship, chosen family, and belonging wherever they went. What made them truly famous was not just their presence online or under the spotlight—it was their heart. They uplifted others, celebrated individuality, and built community through love, generosity, and authenticity.

Their creativity knew no bounds, extending beyond the stage to painting and drawing, where they expressed their innermost thoughts and dreams. A diva through and through, Jen was also a cherished family member, finding immense joy in spending time with loved ones. Their niece, Joy, was a particular source of pride and inspiration, embodying the light and love that Jen shared with the world.

Jen is preceded in death by their grandmothers, Shelby Jean Williams and Marjorie Bateman, grandfather Audrey Bateman, and beloved chihuahua, Nala, who surely met them with lots of kisses at the rainbow bridge.

They leave behind a loving family: parents Janet and Barry Bateman Sr., sisters Amanda Bateman (husband Bobby) and Sheila Kay (husband Michael), niece Joy Anne Bateman, nephews Brandon Latta (with wife Cheyenne), Timothy, and Grayson, great-niece Isabella, great-nephews Wyatt, Jaxon, and Stormi, and brother through many years of friendship, Johnny Wingett. Jen’s beloved pug Simba and a wide circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, and a beautiful community of friends and fellow divas will miss them dearly.

A Celebration of Life will be held at MJ’s Tavern, 4019 Granby St, Norfolk, VA 23504, on February 1st, 2026 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. Friends and family are invited to gather and celebrate the extraordinary life of a true light in this world. Jennifer Dion’s legacy of love, creativity, and authenticity will continue to inspire and uplift all those fortunate enough to have crossed their path.

In lieu of flowers the family would ask for donations to be made to the Treasured Memories Funding set up in their name to help the family bring Barry home to their beloved mother.
