Charles Carfrey Read, born on April 10, 1932, in Washington, D.C. passed away peacefully at home on January 12, 2026, at the age of 93 in Virginia Beach, VA. With a life that spanned over nine decades, Charlie lived with a spirit of adventure, kindness, and warmth that inspired all who knew him.

Charlie served his country with honor as a member of the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955. After his military service, he dedicated his career to the Defense Mapping Agency as a cartographer, where he helped shape the understanding of our world. His major mission was the compilation and distribution of military topographic maps required by the armed forces of the US to protect this great nation. He served his country well to make America the great nation it is. His professional journey was one marked by dedication and precision.

A man of varied interests, Charlie found joy in exploring the world through cruising with his wife, Irene, and traveling. He saw much of the United States and ventured across the Caribbean Sea, always eager for new experiences. An adventurous soul, he parasailed and had a passion for leather tooling and woodworking, pursuits that enriched his life and provided stories that he shared with his signature quick smile and engaging storytelling ability.

For Charlie, family was everything. He was a devoted member of St. John’s Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, where he found community and faith. Charlie never forgot anyone or anything, carrying memories and love for those dear to him throughout his life.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth Read, Sr. and Lottie Read; daughter, Anne Casper; brother, Kenneth Read, Jr. and a son-in-law Scott Singleton.

Charlie is survived by his beloved wife, Irene, whom he met in 1998 and married on July 2, 2000 and had 25 wonderful years of marriage and memories. He leaves behind two daughters, Pamela Singleton and Kimberly Read and a son, Jeffrey Coulter, granddaughters Haley Thompson and her husband, Curtis Thompson, Holly Singleton, Cameron Lochrie; one grandson, Ryan Lochrie and two great-grandchildren Brinley Faith Thompson and Jacie Mae Thompson along with countless friends who cherished his company.

The family, extends a heartfelt thank you to Trinity Hospice for their compassionate care, and especially Ciera Saul, Charlie’s caretaker, whose angelic presence and unwavering support meant everything to both him and his family.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. John’s Baptist Church, 2300 Holland Road, Virginia Beach, VA at 11:00AM and a reception afterwards, January 31, 2026.
