Charles Berkeley “Woody” Woodyard, 89, passed away peacefully in Norfolk, VA on August 30, 2025 from complications of heart failure.
Born on January 13, 1936 in Virginia, he was preceded in death by his birth father, George Franklin Bender; his beloved mother, June Andrea (Richardson/Bender) Woodyard; and his stepfather who adopted him and lovingly raised him, James Clayton Woodyard.
Left to cherish his memory are his brother, Harold “Skeet” Woodyard, and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Being raised in a military family, Woody graduated from Fork Union Military Academy and attended the University of Richmond. He was also a veteran who proudly served in the United States Air Force.
Woody was a free spirit and his own boss. For many years, he was the proverbial traveling salesman. He loved traveling the States but especially loved Virginia Beach, where he always ended up and stayed. Woody never met a stranger. He was an avid football fan and he loved music and dancing, so much so that he was at one time an Arthur Murray Dance Instructor. He also loved a good party, the fun things in life, and was always reaching for the brass ring. Once he finally put his roots down in Virginia Beach, he and a partner started the publication “Where It’s At”, showing tourists and residents alike the hotspots for eating and entertainment at the Beach.
His love for animals and his devotion to his beloved dogs was unparalleled.
A private memorial service is being planned for a later date. Condolences may be offered by visiting www.vacremationsociety.com.
