David Homer Ready (71) died peacefully at home on October 07, 2021, in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
David is survived by his loving wife, Billie Jean Ready; his brother, Bryan Ready; his sons, Andrew Ready and Maxwell Brand; his daughter, Amanda Roberson and her husband, James; and his grandchildren, Tiago, Juliette, Rex, and Maddox. He is preceded in death by his parents, Bryan and Sunny Ready.
David was born on April 21, 1950, in San Antonio, Texas. He was an active member in the Boy Scouts of America and advanced through all the ranks to become an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design Architecture & Urban Planning, followed by a master’s in Architecture in Urban Design in 1975.
David had a rich career as an urban planner and project manager; he enjoyed challenges that benefitted both his clients and communities at large. David kicked off his career as Deputy Director for the Jackson Housing Authority in Jackson, Mississippi. Over the next decades, David served as a project leader and urban developer for various government and private agencies; he also worked on the Long-term Recovery Planning Team for Louisiana’s Hurricane Katrina Relief effort. Throughout his career, David owned several independent consulting agencies that provided support services, planning, and development on projects in the United States, Central America, and Egypt. When he “retired,” David worked for the Department of Defense as a Waterfront Planner in Norfolk, Virginia.
David seized his private life just as intently. He was an avid reader, but also a “do-er.” He enjoyed sailing and remodeling his Offshore Cat Ketch sailboat, as well as riding his Aprillia Scarabeo 500 motorcycle. David could fix anything. He always had his Gerber Multi-tool, a notebook, and a pencil on him to plan and carry out any project. Finally, David was a cat-lover—his kitty-cats, Huck and Jake, sorely miss him.
David was a great family man, a loving father, and terrific grandfather. He married his true love, Billie Jean Ready, in 2004. Together, they lived aboard their sailboat, went on many adventures, and lived happily ever after.
A memorial service is scheduled for David at 1:00PM, Friday, October 22, 2021 at Ocean View Fishing Pier, 400 W Ocean View Avenue. Doctor Charles Hope will officiate. All are welcome to attend and celebrate David’s life. Donations can be sent to The National Heart Association in honor of David Ready.
