Donald Randolph McMath, 74, originally from Cape Charles, Virginia, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 30, 2023, at his home in Virginia Beach.
Born February 11, 1949, in Nassawadox, Virginia, he was the eldest son of the late John Sylvester McMath, Jr. of Cape Charles and the late Hennie DeJarnette McMath of Halifax County; and brother to the late John Sylvester McMath III.
Surviving him are his children, Randy McMath and his wife Gretchen, Lee McMath, Elise McMath, and Logan McMath; and his grandchildren, Emma, Carter, Finley, Owen, and Grey McMath.
Donald graduated top of his class at Cape Charles High School in 1967. He received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1971 from Virginia Military Institute. Donald earned a second Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from the Medical College of Virginia in 1975.
A proud American, Donald served in the United States Army Reserve from 1972 until 1980. He began his pharmaceutical career in 1975 and retired in 2019. He enjoyed his retirement voraciously napping with his golden retriever Babe, riding his beach cruiser along the boardwalk, and traveling across the bay to restore his grandparents’ house.
Don is remembered for his witty humor, patience, and unconditional love. He had an exceptional knowledge of American history and a fascination with boats, trains, planes, and classic cars. His adventurous spirit led to memorable camping and fishing trips, visits to historic monuments and museums, and many nights at the ballpark. April 30th will be celebrated as the day he was reunited with his mom, dad, and brother in Heaven.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20th at the Cape Charles Cemetery.
