With great remorse and loss we announce the death of our dear friend, Dr. Bill C DeWeese, in Virginia Beach, Virginia on Thursday April 20^th, 2023. He was born September 17^th, 1944 in Clinton, Kentucky into a family of farmers. He grew up learning the value of hard work and good morals, but also with a drive to get out of Kentucky. After much effort he earned his Ph.D. from William and Mary. He went on to work for Tidewater Community College his entire career, and when he retired was awarded the honor of Professor Emeritus.

We all have many fond memories of our friend. Whether enjoying good conversation, a glass or wine, or an opera, we all remember him with his beloved dog, Josephine. Bill had several loves in his life, but she held a special place and is inseparable in our memory. He was much loved and will be missed dearly.

Services will be held at the chapel at Westminster Canterbury 2:00pm on Saturday, May 6^th at 3100 Shore Dr., Virginia Beach, VA 23451. Since Bill was a lifetime diabetic, in lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the American Diabetes Association at diabetes.org in his honor.

I had the privilege of caring for Bill for decades. I loved his sense of humor, persistence and his open heartedness. I will miss this unique man who taught me so very much.

Oh what a dear, dear man. I met Bill in 1976 and had the great pleasure of working with him for many years and partying with him for many more as neighbors! I loved his laugh and his joy of life.

I started teaching part-time at TCC in 1987 - history at the Portsmouth campus and French at the Virginia Beach campus where he was my boss. I will always remember a comment I heard him make which influenced the rest of my teaching. I was sitting outside his office waiting for my final interview and another faculty member was in the office (door open) complaining that she had not received a certain appointment to a committee. The faculty member said, "But I have 20 years experience!" And I could hear Bill answer, "No, you don't. You have one year of experience 20 times." I didn't know then and still don't know the faculty member as I preferred teaching closer to home and did not want to make the long commute, but not only do I appreciate him giving me a start, but that remark always stuck with me. In teaching, every year is a new year and should bring forth new knowledge and evolving methods.
